Harry Kane Equals Bayern Goal Scoring Record
Harry Kane has equaled a Bayern Munich goal-scoring record of the most goals in the first half of a Bundesliga season. The striker notched his 22nd goal to tie the record set by Robert Lewandowski in the 2020/2021 season. Kane did this on his 16th match of the league in his debut Bayern season and looks hungry for more records.
Bayern Munich played their 16th league game on Friday, January 12, against TSG 1899 Hoffeinhem. The defending German champions were at home in their 8th home match of the season. It was also their first match since the passing of club legend Franz Beckenabauer, an ex-player and coach.
Outside the Allianz Arena (Bayern’s home stadium), the words ‘Danke Franz,’ which loosely translates to ‘thank you, Franz,’ were emblazoned. All the players wore Beckenabauer’s legendary No. 5 jersey during the warm-up on the pitch. They also walked out to ‘Gute Freunde,’ a song recorded by Beckenabauer in the 1960s before kick-off.
The match began in earnest, and Jamal Musiala gave the home team the lead in the 18th minute off a pass from Leroy Sané. The duo combined again to significant effect in the 70th minute for the match’s second goal — finishing a well-worked move. Harry Kane then wrapped up a historic night with a 90th-minute goal. Kane latched onto a pass from Leon Goretzka and, in his customary manner, finished in the top corner with aplomb. The English national team captain scored his 22nd league goal in 16 matches. With that, he equaled a club record set by Robert Lewandowski in the 2020/2021 season, when the Polish striker also scored 22 goals mid-way into the season.
What’s Next For Kane?
Harry Kane is on the cusp of an astonishingly successful first season at Bayern Munich. While he has equaled Lewandowski’s record of 22 goals, he also has a chance to set a new one outright. Bayern gets to play their 17th league match against Werder Bremen at home on January 21, a match that signifies the middle of the season as Bundesliga teams play 34 games in a league season.
In addition, Kane would be sizing up the prospect of going further to match or surpass Lewandowski’s other record of the most goals in a league season. In the 2020/2021 season, Lewandowski scored 41 goals in 34 games. It was a historic feat as he broke the 41-year record of 40 goals set by Gerd Muller in the 1971/1972 season.
Bayern Munich is also hot on the heels of Bayer Leverkusen, who aims to be the runaway leader of the Bundesliga. The team coached by (no surprise) former Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso has been on a stellar run of form. The table toppers have yet to lose a single-league game all season! Instead, they’ve mesmerized the global football ecosystem with their enchanting displays and goal-scoring prowess.
Munich are currently trailing them by a solitary point, 41 to Leverkusen’s 42. The defending champions would be looking at Kane and co to inspire a successful defense of their league title, of which they won the 10th in a row last season. Bayer never lost a title when their former No. 9 — Lewandowski — was around. They would be hoping it doesn’t start at Kane’s arrival.
Since the Pole left for Barcelona in 2022, no one has come close to his goal-scoring exploits. No one has scored more than 20 goals in the half-season, not to mention 20 more in the second half, until Harry Kane. Now, the onus is on him to see if he can make history in Germany, as he did in England in the years gone by.
