Gen Z’s Dining Out Revolution: The Rise of a Restaurant-Loving Generation
With owning a home becoming harder, many young people are spending their money on dining out. New research shows that ‘broke, woke’ Gen Zers are eating at restaurants more often, making it a regular part of their lives.
Gen Z Dines Out More Often
Dining out used to be a rare treat. But now, Gen Z (ages 14-26) is changing that. According to a recent Seven Rooms report, over a third of Gen Zers go out to eat at least 3-4 times a month. This is much higher than just over 20% of Gen Xers. Surprisingly, 15% of Gen Z visit restaurants more than five times a month.
This trend is a big boost for the UK’s struggling restaurants. They need to find ways to attract and keep customers. But reaching Gen Z can be tricky. How can restaurants and bars win over this new generation of food lovers?
Dining Out Is Now a Habit
For Gen Z, eating out isn’t just for special occasions anymore. The Seven Rooms report shows that 38% of Gen Zers dine out three times a month. Although some still see dining out as a rare treat—47% go out 1-2 times a month—this is lower than 62% of millennials and 70% of Gen Xers.
This change might be due to Gen Z’s focus on enjoying life now rather than saving for the future. Many are spending on experiences instead of saving for a house or retirement.
Value and Preferences Matter
Even though Gen Z might seem like big spenders, they still care about costs. The Seven Rooms report reveals that 59% of Gen Z diners look for free menu items when choosing a restaurant. This is different from millennials, who want early access to reservations, and Gen Xers, who prefer exclusive events.
Restaurants should offer good deals and value for money to attract Gen Z. They also prefer receiving offers via text rather than traditional methods.
Good News for Local Restaurants
This dining trend is great news for local restaurants. As high street brands close and wage increases strain budgets, a loyal Gen Z customer base could help stabilize finances.
However, not catering to this group could be a mistake. Gen Z’s shift away from alcohol has already hurt the pub industry. New changes, like a potential outdoor smoking ban, could make things worse.
Some may see Gen Z’s dining habits as excessive, but others view it as self-care. Either way, their love for eating out is supporting local restaurants and changing how we dine. Perhaps the new motto for this generation is: “Eat Out to Help Out.”
