Nine years after the Oscar-winning blockbuster “Mad Max: Fury Road” captivated audiences, the much-anticipated prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” is set to premiere. Anya Taylor-Joy Channels Her Inner Furiosa in the Much-Anticipated Mad Max Prequel and brings new life to the iconic character originally played by Charlize Theron.
Anya Taylor-Joy, known for her lead role in “The Queen’s Gambit,” shared how her nomadic childhood influenced her portrayal of Furiosa. “I think when I was younger, moving was very difficult for me. I didn’t speak English until I was 8 years old,” Taylor-Joy told NBC News. “The fact that I didn’t necessarily fit into any one place perfectly made me feel like I was less than, and now I’ve realized that I’m actually so lucky to have this really multicultural background and it just makes me who I am.” Born in Miami, spending years in Argentina, and moving to London at age six, Taylor-Joy’s diverse upbringing shaped both her off-screen perspective and her on-screen portrayal of Furiosa.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” premiering nationwide on Friday, tells the origin story of Furiosa before her escape in “Fury Road.” The movie begins with Furiosa’s abduction as a child by a group of bikers and her subsequent custody under the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). She is then traded to the rival warlord, Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme). Fans will recognize Taylor-Joy from her acclaimed roles in “The Queen’s Gambit,” “The Last Night in Soho,” “The Northman,” and “The Menu.”
Reflecting on her introduction to the Mad Max franchise, Taylor-Joy said, “I never imagined in seeing ‘Fury Road’ that I would have the opportunity to play one of the most iconic characters, and she is everything to me. I was really excited to get the job, very excited to play in this particular sandbox with George [Miller, the Mad Max franchise director].”
Anya Taylor-Joy Channels Her Inner Furiosa in the Much-Anticipated Mad Max Prequel by bringing a fresh interpretation while honoring Charlize Theron’s iconic performance. Taylor-Joy noted, “Something that Charlize did so beautifully was that she really tapped into the essence of the character. And so, rather than trying to pull specifically from her performance, I just felt if I tapped into the correct essence of the character that would get me there.”
Taylor-Joy emphasized that Furiosa’s character is seen through the eyes of a woman, making her mission against powerful adversaries deeply resonant. “You’re watching one woman in her singular mission be derailed and kind of squashed down by these two giant powers that be, these two almost demonic men in this instance.”
The “Mad Max” franchise explores a society collapsed by war, lack of resources, and environmental destruction, creating a wide-sweeping survival epic. Taylor-Joy expressed that this type of adrenaline thriller excites viewers because they “want to see the good guy win.” However, it also serves as a stark warning. “If we don’t want to end up in a world that’s barren and where empathy is punished, there are steps that we need to take today.”
Yet, Anya Taylor-Joy Channels Her Inner Furiosa in the Much-Anticipated Mad Max Prequel by also delivering a message of hope. “No matter how many times somebody pushes you down, if you keep standing up, at some point you will come out on top,” she said.
