Hezbollah Device Explosions: Unfolding Tragedy and Rising Tensions in Lebanon
A series of deadly explosions have rocked Lebanon, leaving 32 people dead, including two children, and thousands more injured. The blasts were triggered by communication devices, some used by Hezbollah. The explosions occurred on both Tuesday and Wednesday, spreading fear across the country.
How the Explosions Unfolded
The first wave of explosions began on Tuesday at 3:45 PM local time in Beirut and other areas. People saw smoke coming from their pockets before small blasts erupted. The sound of the explosions resembled fireworks or gunfire.
Reports suggest the devices, mostly pagers, received messages that triggered the explosions. Some believe the blasts were meant to target Hezbollah members. Hospitals across the country were quickly overwhelmed by the injured.
On Wednesday, more explosions happened. This time, walkie-talkies exploded during the funerals of victims from the previous day’s blast. At least 20 more people were killed, and another 450 were hurt. The chaos spread even further.
Who Could Be Behind the Attacks?
Hezbollah quickly blamed Israel for the explosions. Though Israel hasn’t responded to the accusations, experts think they might be responsible. They believe Israel may have hacked into Hezbollah’s communication system to trigger the blasts.
The devices involved include pagers and walkie-talkies. The walkie-talkies were from a Japanese company called Icom, but the devices were last produced over 10 years ago. Some suspect the devices used in the explosions might have been counterfeit.
Why Were the Devices Targeted?
Pagers and walkie-talkies are used by Hezbollah to avoid being tracked through mobile phones, which can be easily monitored. However, this attack shows even low-tech devices are vulnerable. Some U.S. and Israeli officials believe the explosions were part of a bigger plan to launch an attack on Hezbollah. But they may have been triggered early after Hezbollah became aware of the threat.
Tensions Between Hezbollah and Israel Grow
Hezbollah and Israel have been in a tense, low-level conflict for months, often exchanging missile and rocket fire. Both sides are trying to avoid a full-scale war, but these recent explosions have raised fears of an escalation.
Victims of the Blasts
The victims of these tragic explosions include the sons and daughters of Hezbollah members, as well as many civilians. Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon was also injured but is expected to recover. In addition to Lebanon, 14 more people were injured in similar explosions in Syria.
What Happens Next?
With both sides on edge, tensions are high. Lebanon is still reeling from the chaos, with hospitals struggling to treat the thousands of injured. Many worry that more attacks could happen, and the region is watching closely for what comes next.
