Unveiling the Real You: Tinder to Rollout new ID Verification

In a bid to combat the frequentness of online scams and ensure genuine connections, Tinder is rolling out a verification process in key regions, including the U.S., U.K., Brazil, and Mexico. This innovative feature, similar to receiving a virtual stamp of authenticity in the form of a “cool blue checkmark,” aims to provide users with increased confidence in their matches.

The initiative, set to commence in the summer for the U.S. and Mexico and during the spring for the U.K. and Brazil, comes in response to the alarming rise of deceitful practices common on online dating platforms. With scams proliferating across the internet, leaving many individuals emotionally and financially compromised, Tinder’s introduction of a verification tool shows a significant step towards ensuring a safer and more trustworthy digital dating environment.


Following successful trials in Australia and New Zealand, where verified profiles experienced a remarkable 67% increase in matches, Tinder’s verification process requires users to submit a video of themselves along with a valid form of identification, such as a driver’s license. These submissions undergo thorough inspection by third-party assistants to ensure consistency across facial features, profile images, and birthdates.

Additionally, Tinder is introducing an optional feature that allows users to further authenticate their identity by providing specific photos or videos. Upon completion, users receive distinguishable blue icons—a blue camera icon for photo/video verification, a blue ID icon for identification verification, and the coveted blue checkmark for those who undergo both processes, signifying a verified profile.

Beyond individual verification, Tinder’s  goal is to create a global dating ecosystem characterized by enhanced security and trust. This initiative aligns with the platform’s ongoing commitment to prioritizing user safety, dating back to the genesis of its verification tool in 2019 with its initial launch in Japan.

Since its establishment in 2012, Tinder has emerged as a frequent-used platform for forging new connections, amassing over 530 million downloads worldwide and spanning across 190 countries with support for numerous languages. As online scams continue to pose a threat to digital interactions, Tinder’s proactive measures underlines the importance of implementing robust security measures to safeguard users’ experiences.

Tinder’s verification process represents a significant strictness towards fortifying the integrity of online dating platforms. By leveraging innovative technologies and stringent verification protocols, Tinder aims to instil confidence and peace of mind among its user base, empowering individuals to engage in meaningful connections with authenticity and assurance.
