Marvel’s new Spider-Man, which is out in the UK and set to release this weekend for US fans, is looking like it may be the biggest box office smash since the pandemic shut cinemas back in March 2020.

Despite the new Omicron variant threatening cinema’s trading potential for the near future, tickets for the Marvel movie have been causing websites to crash across December. The third MCU Spider-Man has even been predicted to break a box office record for the post-COVID film market.

No Way Home is set to explore the concept of the multiverse that Marvel has played with in previous films, tying the MCU to past Spider-Man films, with previous Spider-Man actors such as Garfield and Maguire reprising their roles, although Marvel tried to conceal their involvement from eagle-eyed fans.

Though the exact number for how much the new movie will take in for its debut weekend varies, all reports agree that the film will take over $100 million. Production company Sony has predicted $130 million across Thursday and the following weekend.

Variety has predicted slightly higher at $150 million, also reporting that some other predictors are looking at an opening weekend of up to $175 million.

No Way Home has made waves in the media, with all eyes on co-stars Zendaya and Holland’s romance; Holland has even stated in an interview he may not be taking up the next Spiderman mantle if a new movie is made, as he is desperate to start a family and live life “more freely”.

The couple made a red carpet appearance on Monday evening for the world premiere of the new film, with Zendaya wearing a floor-length cobweb gown custom made by Valentino to resemble a spider’s web, complete with a black lace mask similar to what boyfriend Holland wears in the movie itself.

Holland has been praised this week for commenting on how a height difference between men and women is not worth discussing. It has only added fuel to fan’s fire that these two are a couple worth watching, with fans noticing and speculating on the chemistry between the two actors for years.

No Way Home premiered at the Fox Village Theatre in Los Angeles on December 13, 2021, and will be released as part of Phase Four of the MCU. If these box office predictions are correct, No Way Home could have the biggest opening weekend of any Spider-Man film – even with Covid-19.

The current record is Spider-Man 3, which took in $150 million in 2007. Even if it doesn’t quite break this record, the film is set to make a huge splash in an industry, with predictions heavily optimistic for the industry that has been severely damaged by the pandemic.

Reviews of the film have been overwhelmingly positive, with writer Johnny Oleksinski praising Holland’s performance as Peter Parker – saying he goes from “Spider-Boy” to “Spider-Man”: “the former Billy Elliot proves he’s more than a teen idol with a perfect American accent,” giving the movie three and a half out of four stars from the New York Post.

Meanwhile, IGN states that “there’s truly never a dull moment.” With villains from past Spider-Man movies also appearing, such as Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx, the movie seems dubbed as a must-see for fans, even if it has been noted to have some plot inconsistencies.
