RuPaul’s Drag Race Recap: Season 13, Episode Ten (Freaky Friday Queens)

Disclosure: Spread love not hate, these are opinions based on facts, let’s go.

Summary.

This week the dreaded Makeover challenge has arrived, but due to Covid restrictions, the queens will be making each other over. They are paired up by a psychic medium, and are asked to turn their partner into their drag doppelganger! Utica Queen and Symone came out triumphant from the challenge, but lip syncing for their life we had Olivia Lux and Denali. In the end Oliva shantayed and sadly, Denali sashayed away back to Chicago.

ArE yOu SmaRtEr thAN tHe PiT CrEw? Mini-Challenge

For the mini-challenge the queens have to answer a series of Drag Race trivia delivered by the Pit Crew, safely distanced and shirtless behind the television screen. Kandy Muse wins the challenge by answering a Maths question in the end.

Let’s give the S13 Pit Crew a bit of attention, since these recaps never do. Shout out to the very handsome Bruno Alcantara, our resident red-head Bryce Eilenberg, and our Entertainment Tonight personality Jason Carter. Lastly, shout out to my favourite legacy Pit Crew member Shawn Morales.

Also, in the spirit of transparency and progressiveness, these recaps do not endorse the notion that the Pit Crew are not smart. This writer believes in the right of hot people to be as intelligent as they desire to be, can I get a halleloo?

Commercial-Shooting Time!

Branding/Marketing challenges in the past have brought us amazing content that’s gone on to live Rent Free in fans’ minds. Some of my favourites? For an injection of joy in your life, take a look at AS2 Katya’s Krisis Kontrol Commercial or S5 Jinkx Monsoon’s Delusion Perfume Commercial. Both iconic in their own right, both memes that float around the internet in queer spaces.

Highlights here? Symone’s absolute ease in delivering her lines and general concept is an impressive highlight. I can’t recall a time when Drag Race has had this clear of a frontrunner, from so early on, being likeable and good at so many challenges… in fact, the only queen that comes to mind is BenDeLaCreme on AS3 (and coincidentally a co-host of this week’s Pit Stop with Trixie Mattel). BenDeLa won 5 challenges and eliminated herself before the end of the season…

Another standout was Kandy Muse filming her commercial. Giving Everything Must Be Leopard Print realness and continuing to show the judges an ace personality, full of funny and determination. Rosé was also quite good here, wearing a bathrobe that called back to her S12 Jan and her facecrack meme. We know of course that she won with her interpretation, but it was awesome seeing Rosé rise up to her comedy potential once again.

Category Is… BEAST Couture!

Like last week on this recap, if you’re not at the top, you’re at the bottom.

This might be my favourite runway theme in the season, and let’s begin chronologically. Utica Queen delivered absolute glamour in a Long Black Maleficent-Inspired Gown by frequent-collaborator Rachel Ann Dombi. The judges felt this interpretation was too beautiful for the category, but I thought it was breathtaking; though not enough to save her from lip-syncing, in that we agree.

People on the internet have been hating on Kandy Muse’s fashion, and I will publicly and unapologetic defend her choices at every turn if necessary. Kandy’s Alien Couture is by BCALLA and I thought it was a perfectly acceptable campy interpretation. Did it have the same wow factor as Symone’s or Rosé’s, no. Does that matter? Yes. But does it matter to me? No. Moving on!

Tina Burner. It is my opinion that Tina was judged far too harshly throughout the season. I don’t think her runway or her performance was bad in this episode, and I do believe she should’ve had a high placement or at least been safe. Her Frankenstein Teddy Bear Beast was designed by Florence D’Lee and constructed by NOLA Costumes. Her makeup might be a different story… but my judgement remains (Gottmik and Utica had the weakest commercials in the roster).

Now, we’ve arrived at that part of the recap, where I gush about Symone and her Foxy Furry Beast by Marco Marco. There was a lot of talk of Furries in the episode, what are they you might ask? Well, Urban Dictionary describes them as “a person with an interest in anthropomorphic animals” and being a Furry is also more colloquially understood to be a sexual kink (Oooh). So! Cheers to Symone for bringing the underground overground onto the runway, support her IGTV Channel as she continues to put out inspiring content.

Also wearing Marco Marco we have the incomparable Gottmik in a Purple Monster Tooth-y Fantasy. I spy supermodel Heidi Klum in Mik’s IG comment section sending her all the emojis of the rainbow. We love models supporting each other. Also, Olivia Lux in her Monster Inc Couture by Pierretta Viktori, a designer responsible for one of last year’s Houndstooth Designs modelled by Bob The Drag Queen.

Last up! Rosé! Wearing a Red Demon Mistress from the Woods Lewk designed and constructed by Casey Caldwell. Rosé’s physicality in this outfit was so compelling, her every spin and turn kept me hooked and interested. Without a doubt my favourite look down the runway.

Lowlights of the Week

There are no runway lowlights this week! I thought everyone really brought it. In the challenge, however… Gottmik was the driver and operator of the struggle train this week. As much as I love her, I did think she should’ve lip-synced for her life against… *drumrolls* Utica Queen. Her commercial was a mess, and it’s just unfortunate that she isn’t able to hone her weirdness into structured, digestible cuts (Katya is very off the beaten path, but she makes it make sense does she not?).

A separate lowlight goes to the judges take on Tina Burner this week! She wore something other than her signature red-orange-yellow on the runway, and she was funny/professional in the challenge. I think these were things that should have been celebrated! Not sent home for. Alas, I look forward to an All-Stars edition of Tina Burner… in the future.

Lip Sync… For Your Lifeee!

Yas, the lip sync song this week was My Humps by the Black Eyed Peas and in the bottom two, we had Utica Queen and NYC drag veteran Tina Burner. It was an evenly matched lip synced, high energy from Tina, spooky-kooky energy from Utica. culminating in Tina Burner sashaying away from the competition, and Utica shantaying to fight another day.

Werkroom Moment of Grace!

Let’s give it up for the guest appearance of our reigning queen, Jaida Essence Hall, who was beamed into the Werkroom for a chat. The queens got some lovely words of encouragement from her, and seeing her on our screens made me (as a hard stan of Jaida) very happy. Support her recent collaboration with S12 Nicky Doll as they perform Beyonce and Shakira’s Beautiful Liar on IGTV.

Quote of the Week –

“I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. Your best defence against financial ruin… is a side ponytail”

— RuPaul, loving Symone’s outfit

— Kandy Muse reading Denali to filth for saying she should go home, reading Tina on the way, and showing RuPaul why she should be in as many episodes as possible.

Unseen Lewk of the Week! –

Kahmora Hall Turnts-ouTs-the-lewrKs-every-singlerT-Time. Please take a look at her Drag Beast Couture by frequent-collaborator Domingo Cholula. Also, Denali giving Alien Couture, really making us miss her this week.
